He thought she was the perfect victim. So did she. Neither could have been more wrong.
Previously published under the title "HE'S FASTER"
A Nice Jagged Edge is an action-packed darkly comedic short story prequel to Carlyle Clark’s first novel in the gallows-humored mystery crime thriller series Children from Dark Houses.
Before Rosemary Sanchez became a private investigator and a combat veteran, she was a just girl who wanted to spend a quiet night alone in a hideaway cabin in the woods, pondering the biggest decision of her life. Unfortunately, she soon realizes she is far from alone.
A man lurks in the night, his cruel compulsions driving him into the cabin after Rosemary, and it will take every ounce of her courage and cunning just to see the dawn.

Q & A with the Author
Q – With all the great mystery thriller series out there, what makes the Atticus & Rosemary series stand-out?
A - Writing these, I was determined to conjure stories like the ones I love, dark and violent yet somehow still often humorous, and driven by heroes with heart and courage and a sense of justice that’s not always in line with what’s legal. Crime stories like that had me devouring countless private investigator novels, thrillers, and pretty much any series with a detective, public or private, but especially those with characters driven to do “the right thing.”
Atticus and Rosemary embody what Raymond Chandler described in his essay The Simple Art of Murder “But down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid . . . He must be, to use a rather weathered phrase, a man of honor, by instinct, by inevitability, without thought of it, and certainly without saying it.” It is crucial to me to have a woman who lived up to this billing, perhaps even more so than the man, and Rosemary more than fits that bill.
Q - What order should I read the series in?
A – I suggest you read the series in the chronological order below, however each works perfectly as a standalone. Be sure not to go by publication order, because the series was not published in chronological order.

A Nice Jagged Edge An Atticus Rosemary Mystery Thriller Series Short Story Prequel Book 3 edition by Carlyle Clark Literature Fiction eBooks
Reading this short story, I realized that I'd misread the narrative voice of "Children From Dark Houses (An Atticus & Rosemary Mystery Thriller Book 1)." It wasn't purple: it was a Harlem preacher channeling Raymond Chandler, a sizzle of similes and suspense. I really enjoyed this backstory, fleshing out Rosemary without ever feeling like an exposition. We get to know her through the action, through her behavior in mortal danger - and suddenly, the things characters kept saying about her in "Children From Dark Houses" made sense and came to life.I recommend reading this short first - both to get an idea of the narrative tone and a much fuller appreciation of one of the main characters.

A Nice Jagged Edge An Atticus Rosemary Mystery Thriller Series Short Story Prequel Book 3 edition by Carlyle Clark Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This short story takes you from hilarious to edge-of-your-seat intense in 60 seconds. This is one of those rare reads that will not only make you laugh out loud, but will make your heart race in suspense as well.
Great read that ended to soon. Now to see what happens next, You have to read this Short Preview to understand!
Good writing makes a good short story. So treat yourself. Don't you just love discovering a new author?
I was warned about the profanity, but didn't realize we were talking PROFANITY! Too much for me although the book was quite good and moved along nicely. Characters could have been developed a bit more but it did set up what kind of person the heroine was.
"A Nice Jagged Edge" was a fun, edgy read. Phrases like 'chickeny-scared,' 'helmet-like perm,' and 'sweet baby Christ in a car seat' kept me turning the page, if for no other reason than to see what the author would say next. This short trip inside the mind of his main character was the perfect blend of 'terrifying and funny' with a hint of sarcasm for good measure.
As an up and coming author myself, I know how important a review can be. An honest review is all the better, so I must admit that I gave it four stars because it needed a bit more editing.
This is an intense read, but it really is more of a teaser for more books and more of the story by this author. I think I would enjoy a novel more. The writing, however, was well done. I just wish I would have realized how short this was and that it was a prequel before I began reading.
Rosemary Sanchez just wants to spend some time alone in her aunt's remote cabin in the woods. She has some very important decisions to make, and the silence of the surrounding forest is just what she needs to think more clearly. However, someone else has something entirely different planned for her evening...and it will take all of Rosemary's courage and cunning just to see the dawn.
I'm currently reading 'The Black Song Inside' by Carlyle Clark, and this story just happened to catch my eye as I browsed the Internet. I enjoyed reading this story very much. There was a thread of dark humor - even in the midst of such suspense - that I totally appreciated. I found the characters' various choices and actions to be absolutely believable, and realistic for the situation.
I give 'He's Faster' by Carlyle Clark an A! It's not necessary to read this story to understand 'The Black Song Inside', but I'm certainly glad that I did.
