listened to this as a free librivox audiobook, "The Girl on the Boat" (its other title), but will read this version too to check that there aren't significant reasons to dis-recommend this (formatting, e.g.) Three Men and a Maid was the title under which it appeared in 1921 as a serial in a magazine, according to Wikipedia, btw. First published in the US in April 1922 and under its best-known title (The Girl on the Boat) in the UK in June 1922. Three Men and a Maid Humor Author P G Wodehouse 9781537136516 Books Reviews
Typical P.G.Wodehouse book. For some reason I have never come across a print version.
I suspect that may be because this book is in some ways politically incorrect.
What can I say? I love anything and everything by Wodehouse. Even though his plots are predictable and his characters are not complex, his writing is delightful. He can write the same story ten times over and still make you laugh. Wodehouse was a comic genius and the delight of his writing is in his word play, his love of life, and empathy for the foibles of the human race.
Wodehouse's work is always fantastic, but I have previously preferred novels in the "Wooster and Jeeves" series. However, "Three Men and a Maid" is certainly one of the best comic novels ever written. Wodehouse's clever word play, comic references to the classics, especial that Bill guy/Francis Bacon and overall brilliance shine brightly in "Three Men and a Maid". (It has a great beat and it is easy to dance to, I give it a 98.)
As are all of Wodehouse's output. Perhaps there never was a time the like of which he paints but we all firmly wish there was and that we lived there. Innocence reigns supreme. Only melodrama of the most dramatic sort is allowed. And always the curtain closes, the lights fade on the happiest of endings. Ah! If life were only like this...
I've read only two earlier books by this humour genius, now I wish to devour all without wait. This is small book, but full of so many comedy of errors that one cannot not laugh out loud (not of LOL variety) every other page. Author's favourite style is to put two character in contact and communication, each referencing entirely different subject, and bewildering at plausible direction the conversation is taking, yet still trying to salvage, but not really giving away their own confusion in search of clarity. Author breaks the fourth wall often, giving direct commentary to reader on topics related or unrelated to books. One cannot help wondering how well this narrative will suit a motion picture! Must read and you will be thankful that you did.
But it was just as funny as the first. It is PGW at his best, so I highly recommend for your library and for your soul. Delightfully funny and a quick read.
Many people think of P. G. Wodehouse only in regard to his Jeeves and Wooster characters, which PBS as made so popular. However, as we read Wodehouse's earlier works, we can see much of the basis upon which he built those well known characters.
All in all, you know what you get when you read Wodehouse. If you expect deep thinking characters who will change the world, go somewhere else. If you want fun and laughter, read Wodehouse.
Three Men and a Maid is a laugh-out-loud early Wodehouse novel. As usual, young moneyed, clueless people wander through life without having any touch with reality. (One presumes Wodehouse's young men will suddenly have some sort of epiphany and instantly become the stiff upper lip backbone of British society and the bubble headed young women will pull their heads out of the clouds and put on a cardigan sweater, some extra pounds, good sturdy shoes, and set about enforcing the rules of society which have so long frustrated our silly young men.)
In Three Men and a Maid, young people fly into and out of love and engagements without a second thought. In fact, the Maid in this novel, Billie Bennet, was engaged to Eustace, Samuel, Bream, then to Samuel again in less than a couple of weeks.
Wodehouse spins a good yarn, twisting the plot and the characters' dilemmas like a circus contortionist. This plot is somewhat familiar a young man falls in love at first sight, makes convoluted plans to win her heart, plans backfire, "burglars in the country house; yet, everything turns out right in the end.
This is typical Wodehouse, which guarantees that the reader is in for a lot of fun!
